The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (75 years old)  with over 3.500 students, offers 13 undergraduate courses, 26 Master’s courses and 8 doctoral courses in the following fields: Archaeology, Information and Communication Sciences, Language Sciences, Romance Languages and Classical Studies, English Studies, German Studies, Philosophy, Geography, History, History of Art, Museology, and Sociology.  

Key personnel

João Teixeira Lopes Ph.D. in Sociology of Culture and Education (1999) with Essay The City and Culture – A Study on Urban Cultural Practices . Member of the Observatory of Cultural Activities between 1996 and 1998. Joined the coordinator team of the National Report on Cultural Policy (1985-95) presented in 1998 at the Council of Europe (Lisbon, Portugal on Cultural Policies, Observatory of Cultural Activities, 1998). Programmer when Porto was the European Capital of Culture 2001 while responsible for the involvement of the population and a member of the original team that drafted the application submitted to the European Council. Represented the Left Bloc as a deputy to the National Assembly (2002-2006). Scientific Coordinator of the Institute of Sociology Faculty between 2002 and February 2010. Journal of Sociology Director between 2009 and February 2013. Has published 26 books (alone or in co-authorship) in the fields of sociology of culture, city, youth and education, as well as museology and territorial studies. Received The Honour “Palmes Académiques” by the french Government President of the Portuguese Sociological Association.

Lígia Ferro is assistant professor and a researcher at the Institute of Sociology and at the Sociology Department of the University of Porto (Portugal).  She received her Ph.D. from the University Institute of Lisbon, ISCTE-IUL in 2011. Lígia Ferro was the European Sociological Association Research Network 37 – Urban Sociology coordinator (2015-2017). Currently, she is vice-president of the European Sociological Association and a member of the board of the European Network of Observatories in the Field of Arts and Cultural Education – UNESCO. Since 2016 she is member of the directive committee of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS). Ferro was a visiting scholar at universities in Europe, the United States of America and Brazil. She is the author, co-author and editor of several publications, including the books “Moving Cities: Contested Views on Urban Life” (2018, Springer) and “Arts and Cultural Education in a World of Diversity – ENO #1” (2019, Springer). Lately she has been working on urban street cultures, arts education, migrations, children and their uses of the city.

Natália Azevedo – Sociologist. Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP) and Researcher of the Institute of Sociology (IS-FLUP) of the same institution, since 1996. Graduated, Master and PhD in Sociology from FLUP, she develops research activities as coordinator or researcher, in the areas of culture, the arts and education; of public policies for culture, local development and cultural tourism, particularly in the metropolitan context: the Porto Metropolitan Area. She is the responsible and co-coordinator of several Master’s dissertations and PhD theses and has integrated juries of various academic tests. She is the author and co-author of books and scientific and communications articles in academic circles.
