Telemark Research Institute, NO

Researchers at Telemark Research Institute are working within a various and broad specter of topics. Common for most projects, are the close ties between the academic perspectives and the need for applicable knowledge of decision-makers at different levels. Culture and cultural policy research has a long tradition at Telemark Research Institute. Research in the area of culture, with an emphasis on cultural policy analysis, has been a core theme from the founding of the institute.

Key personnel

Ole Marius Hylland is a cultural historian, educated from the University of Oslo. He majored in folklore studies and wrote his doctoral thesis in cultural history about public education in the 1800s. Has worked as a lecturer at the University of Oslo and as a senior advisor at ABM-utvikling (Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority). Hylland is currently working at Telemark Research Institute. His research interests include the ideology, rhetoric and history of cultural policy, public education and popular culture. Hylland has written a number of evaluations of different cultural policy projects, especially within the fields of performing arts, art for children and museology. He has written a number of articles on different topics in cultural policy and cultural history, including articles on the topic of bad quality in the arts, and on the term intrinsic value. He has also written, co-written and edited several books on cultural policy, including Aesthetics and Politics (Palgrave, 2018).

Ola K. Berge –  holds a Ph.D. and MA in Cultural Studies from University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), and is currently working as a senior researcher at Telemark Research Institute (TRI). Here he leads the department of cultural policy research. His research interests include cultural sociology and international cultural policy, and recent work has i.a. focused on Foreign Cultural Policy, more specifically the Norwegian MFA’s cultural policy responsibility and practice, popular culture and food. Recently, Berge has also done research within the field art and culture for youth and children. Berge has experience from various research and development projects, most prominently from the field of culture, but also research fields like regional development and policies. In addition to his position at TRI, Berge holds an Ass. Professor II-position at the University of South-Eastern Norway.

Åsne Dahl Haugsevje –  is working at Telemark Research Institute within the field of cultural policy. She holds a master’s degree in Cultural Studies from the University of Bergen (2001). Art and culture for children and young people, cultural labour and cultural and creative industries are among her research interests. For the time being, she works on a PhD-thesis on cultural and creative industries in regional contexts in Norway, with a connection to the University of South-Eastern Norway. She has participated in and managed several projects on cultural policy topics such as church music, opera, film, visual art, museum and culture for children and young people. Haugsevje has published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, a book, and a number of commissioned reports.
